Nigerian singer and producer, Smokes Kitchen talks with Jeremiah Robert on Music Plug Podcast.
Smokes Kitchen who hails from Calabar South was on the recent Music Plug Podcast as he spoke about his journey in the music industry. The singer and producer traced his success story to Ace music producer and singer, Teddybantyonthebeat who encouraged him to start learning how to produce music.
Joseph Effiong musically know as Smokes Kitchen talked about how he resides in Bakassi and the influence the city had on him. ” I’m famous in Bakassi and our songs are played across borders though the city is not well known but they’re many talents hidden in the city not only fish and fishing activities”
He was asked, how did you derive your name Smokes Kitchen because it sounds like someone who owns a restaurant or Chef related? The singer replied; “The name was an inspiration and a gift, my name is Jossy but I have to add Smokes kitchen because I cook good music and I one time dropped an EP title Unstoppable Smokes meaning no one can stop me”
When asked about his journey in the music industry, he said ; I Started as a dancer, move to becoming a rapper and now a singer. He dicovered himself at Calabar Christmas Village stage when MC Mbakara was the then host of the event which made him bought a player and started his journey of music with freestyling with instrumentals.
His artistic influence includes, Afrobeats superstar Davido and Singer Teddybantyonthebeat.
The question of what inspired him to stay in CALABAR without moving to Lagos came up and he answered by saying; Calabar is not a bad place as people paints it, others moved out of the city, up till date nobody heard about them. He went further to say, with the help of Social Media, one can be anywhere and still blow up that everything depends on hard work and positive disturbance.
Smokes mentioned his top trending artiste in the city of CALABAR which includes, Teddybanty, Former Okpo Records, Jemi9ice and Challex De Boss.
His name had been trending on Social Media with his new songs Location which he said he wants the song to open doors and bring more fans to him. Also the video, shot by Kenny J was be on air September 1st, 2023 via Hip TV and CRBC to those who cannot afford DSTV or GO TV.
They had been serious comments about Burna Boy saying Afrobeats has no substance. Smokes said he won’t agree to that because Afrobeat created the environment and fame for him to thrive. Afrobeats is the easiest genre of music.
Smokes who’s a fan of Davido said the king of Afrobeat is Wizkid.
